Wildcat Women Claim Title at GFU Invitational

BROOKS, Ore. – Led by a second-place finish from Hannah Greider, the Linfield women notched their second team victory of the season, edging Northwest University by just two points at the George Fox Invitational, held Saturday morning at Willamette Mission State Park.

All five scoring Wildcats placed in the top 15, helping Linfield to a meet-low 44 total points. The senior captain completed the five-kilometer course in 18:40, exactly 10 seconds and two places ahead of the Wildcats' No. 2 runner, Siena Noe.

Madison Trowbridge finished just outside the top 10 with an 11th-place effort (19:18) while Katie Skinner was 13th in 19:22. Coming in just ahead of Northwest University's fifth runner, Marisa Kume, secured the team victory for the Wildcats with her 14th-place finish (19:32).

“I asked the ladies to pack up and work together through the first mile,” stated associate head coach Greg Mitchell. “It ended up working out quite well for them. If they can do that at the conference meet, good things will come.”

Katie Higinbotham (#72) and Shaylin Curtis work together mid-race.
In the men's 8K, Joe Gladow finished as the highest Division III competitor – and fourth overall – with a time of 25 minutes, 42 seconds. Linfield's top five placed in the top 25, lifting the Wildcats to third place in the team standings. “That’s the best my legs have felt this season,” stated Gladow. “Things are coming around at the right time.”

Alex Mangan came in second for Linfield, which totaled 72 points to outdistance fellow Northwest Conference squad George Fox (83). The sophomore was 14th overall in 26:32. Michael O'Neil and Calvin Howell finished back-to-back in 16th and 17th places, respectively. O'Neil clocked in at 26:37 while Howell came in at 26:43. Linfield XC Alums Race at US Marathon Championships

Minneapolis, MN – Marci (Klimek) Gage, ’10 and Greg Mitchell, ’95 headed to the Twin Cities Marathon with their eyes on finishing among the top marathoners in the country and came away from the weekend having done just that. The Twin Cities Marathon was the host for the 2013 US Open Marathon Championships as well as the US Masters (age 40+) Marathon Championships.

Gage, 25, battled against many of the best women marathoners in the country and came away with an 11th place finish, just missing a spot in the top ten. “
It was 20 miles of flight, three more of fight, and three more of pure survival,” stated Gage. “ The marathon is such an adventure.” Gage’s time of 2:39:31 was also good enough to qualify her for the 2016 Olympic Marathon Trials.

Mitchell, 40, who is also the associate head cross country and assistant track coach for the Wildcats, finished in 6th place in the US Masters Championship, crossing the line in a time of 2:26:51. “I’m happy with a top 10 finish,” stated Mitchell, “But I thought I’d run a bit faster and grab a spot in the top 5. It was fun though – at least through mile 24 or so…” Mitchell finished 33rd overall in the marathon.

Greg Mitchell (#243) mid-race at the US Masters Marathon Championships in MN.
“I am always harping on the athletes I work with to continue running post-collegiately and to follow their running dreams,” stated Mitchell. “So it was pretty special to be at the start line with Marci in the field. It was really cool to see her place so high at her first US Marathon Championship too.”

Wildcats Battle at Willamette Invite

SALEM, Ore. – With matching 25th-place efforts, Joe Gladow and Siena Noe paced the Linfield men and women at the Willamette Charles Bowles Invitational Saturday afternoon at Bush’s Pasture Park and both Wildcat teams placed 10th overall

Gladow completed the 8,000-meter course in 25 minutes, 48 seconds. Junior Calvin Howell recorded a personal best which was good enough for another top-50 finish for the Wildcats with a 40th-place showing in 26:13.30.

Alex Mangan and Michael O’Neil were the 64th and 68th runners, respectively, to cross the finish line. Mangan clocked in at 26:40.20 while O’Neil came in at 26:48.64. Adrian Clifford rounded out the scoring on the Linfield men’s side with a 90th-place showing in 27 minutes, 20.40 seconds.

“The guys battled hard,” stated assistant coach Chris McIsaac. “They’re coming off of some really hard training and were toeing the line with some pretty tired legs, so we’re fairly pleased with the outcome.”

Noe finished as the Wildcats’ No. 1 runner for the first time this year, registering a time of 18 minutes, 52.12 seconds for the 5,000-meter women’s race. Fellow senior Katie Skinner came in 13 places back in 19:11.41. Marisa Kume and Hannah Greider also came in among the top 75 runners overall. Kume was 70th (19:31.04) while Greider took 75th (19:35.94). Linfield’s fifth scoring runner was Madison Trowbridge, who finished 116th in a time of 20 minutes, 17.54 seconds.

“We had a bit of a mixed bag on the women’s side,” stated McIsaac. “There were some big PRs, but also some disappointing performances - but that comes with the territory this time of year. Once we back off here shortly, things should come around for everyone.”

Wildcats Head to Miller Woods
September 28, 2013

MCMINNVILLE, Ore. - With no race on the schedule, the Wildcats headed to Miller Woods for the now infamous “Hill 1981” workout followed by a brutal final climb to “The Bench.” A brief ten minute drive from Linfield, Miller Woods is a 130 acre property with 94 forested acres and 36 acres in pasture and hay land. You can find old growth trees, ponds and streams, great views of the Yamhill Valley, and of course, many miles of running trails.

“I don’t think there is any other location in the county with trails and scenery that rival Miller Woods,” stated Associate Head Coach Greg Mitchell. “It’s great to be hammering your way up the hills through a tunnel of branches with the morning sun just breaking through the trees and the only sound is the gasping breathing of you and your teammates. It’s a quintessential cross country training ground.”
Madison Trowbridge leads the varsity women up the final climb to "The Bench."

The workout involved running a hill circuit on a double-track access road that loops through a heavily forested area of the park. The athletes complete four to nine circuits – depending on gender and fitness – and then finish the workout off with a climb out of the wooded area and up to The Bench, which sits at the apex of a hill at the center of the park. The workout builds physical strength, but perhaps more importantly, tests the mental toughness of the athletes.

“It was a soul-searching kind of workout,” continued Mitchell. “The rain was falling. The wind was whipping through the trees. It was cold and muddy. Only each individual knows what kind of effort they put in. I hope at the end of the day, the athletes were able to answer the question: ‘What am I made of?'"
